Parents - What’s Safe for your Little One’s at Sephora?
The trend is clear - more and more young girls are joining the Sephora community by the day. As wonderful as it is to inspire our youth with radiance & beauty, some makeup and skincare products are simply too mature for young skin. So how can you be sure that what your little one’s add to their cart are age-appropriate?
As hard as I try to educate our youth when they come onsite to Sephora, it often falls upon deaf ears. It seems the trending Tik Tok products & need to be popular has a strong hold on this sage group (we can’t say we haven’t all been there!) So, I am writing to the parents who may have more jurisdiction.
I have created a list of ten products that you and your little one can confidently and safely use at home, along with helpful information on ingredients to avoid when scanning the shelves. This list is meant to serve as their own “mini skincare routine” and is embellished with brands that are most commonly shopped by this age group.
1 - Youth to the People Gentle Cleanser
This cleanser is definitely gentle enough for your kiddos. With main ingredients like kale, spinach, green tea, and vitamin E, your child’s skin is safe & sound. Some ingredients to steer clear of in the cleansing isle are chemical exfoliants (AHA, BHA), synthetic fragrances, and benzoyl peroxide.
2 - Honey Milk Hydrating Essence
This essence is infused with chamomile, ceramides, and white honey and is best suited for those with dry, sensitive skin. Fear not - ceramides can helps to restore the skins natural barrier and retains mouster, designed for sensitive skin. Chamomile calms & soothes redness while Hawaiian white honey helps to nurture dry and irritated skin.
3 - Drunk Elephant Bronzing Drops
Not a necessary skincare step by any means, but if your little one is looking for a tanning alternative, the viral bronzing drops may be a good choice. The bronzer does not stain the skin & is infused with cocoa extract. One thing to note, however, is that Chronocyclin is included in the ingredients list. This is not cause for red alarm, just something to be aware of since Chronocyclin has anti-aging properties that mimic vitamin D. If it’s added to your cart, not the end of the world - and worth mentioning since this product has gone viral!
4 - Tower 28 SOS Facial Spray
This facial spray is fantastic for all ages! Hypochlorous acid is safe for immature skin as it is non-toxic and non-irritating. This facial spray helps to sooth the skin & prevent harmful bacteria from growing or spreading. Many facial sprays on the market are non-harmful to younger clients, but be on the lookout for essential oils and niacinamide - these ingredients may be too intense for immature skin.
5 - Glow Recipe Watermelon Moisturizer
Glow Recipe has a huge youth following, and with packaging this adorable, it’s easy to understand why. Not all of their products are kid friendly, though! This moisturizer is a great example of a clean, safe, and effective moisturizer on the market for young skin. Watermelon extract, hyaluronic acid, and glycerin are safe & ready to hydrate your little one’s skin. There are SO many moisturizers on the market, try to avoid terminology that resembles “ant-aging” or “plumping” when hand selecting your products.
6 - Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm
Thank goodness that this product is safe for all - it’s a lip softening miracle that all should enjoy! This soothing balm includes shae butter & seed butter to hydrate, sooth, and boost shine. Some ingredients to keep an eye out for in other lip products are plumping glosses. No matter how pretty or sparkly these packages are, take caution to avoid plumping your younger one’s lips - it could cause burning & irritation!
7 - Sephora Vitamin E Eye Mask
The under eye area is especially delicate, so it is important to double check your ingredient list before your purchase. This eye mask contains papaya and aloe vera - two safe ingredients for immature skin. Papaya is highly concentrated with vitamins and aloe vera sooths the skin, making this a fun & hydrating mask for daytime or nighttime. When picking up an eye mask for your little one, try to avoid “anti-aging” ingredients as well as niacinamide, retinal, or high levels of caffeine extract.
8 - Gisou Lip Oil
Sometimes we get lucky, and the right products go viral. The entire Gisou line is kid-friendly, and bonus, works great for adults too. The forward ingredients in all Gisou products is honey, and this lip oil is no exception. Hyaluronic acid is also present in the lip oil, but this offers a safe dose of hydration to your little one’s lips. If you are looking for an alternative to some of the more high-end lip oils that Sephora offers, look no further than Gisou!
9 - Sol de Janeiro Body Fragrance
I would be remised not to mention Sol de Janeiro on a kid-friendly Sephora product list. The popularity of this brand knows no age - with several options to choose from, everyone has their favorite scent! For those who are intrigued by fragrance, this is a great introductory product prior to a larger perfume investment. These are fun, affordable, and smell great for all ages.
10 - Origins Drink Up Hydrating Mask
To close out our list, we have a product that will lock in moisture overnight to smooth and hydrate your kiddos skin without the fear of irritation. This product contains avocado & Swiss Glacier water, and hyaluronic acid. Avocado is rich in fats & nutrients for long term nourishment, while Swiss Glacier water works hand in hand with hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate the skin. If your little one’s skin is constantly dry, especially in the morning, this would be a great add to cart!
